How can I use XML in Publishing

DocBook and the Google Summer of Code 2011

Background

Unfortunately, the DocBook project was not approved to participate in the Google Summer of Code for 2011. We'll try again next year.

Administrators

Dick Hamilton and Stefan Seefeld are co-administrators for the DocBook project. To the extent that Google needs an organizational contact, Dick and XML Press will be that contact.

Schedule

  • March 10: Dick will submit the application to Google
  • March 18: Google will publish the list of accepted organizations
  • March 18-27: Would-be student participants discuss application ideas with the DocBook community.
  • March 28 - April 8: Students apply to program
  • April 9 - April 22: We (the mentors) select students/projects and assign mentors
  • April 25: Accepted student proposals announced on the Google Summer of Code 2011 site.

See GSoC Timeline(external link) for latest changes and additional dates.

How-to Use this Site

To use the site, register for a login on the site (upper right hand corner of this page), then once you're registered and logged in, you will have permission to add pages and edit the site (the registration was like Wikipedia, no approval necessary, but because of a couple of morons who added spam links, I've set up the process so I need to approve new registrations; since all the people who need to be on are already registered, I don't think that will cause any inconvenience to real users).

If you are a student interested in the project, the best place to start is the Student Information Page.

Google Summer of Code 2011

The Google Summer of Code(external link) is a program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various software projects. Students are paired with mentors for each project.

If we are accepted into the program, students will then have the opportunity to apply to work on one of our ideas or they can generate their own ideas. Once they have submitted applications, we will select the students/projects that we want to work with.

Mentor signup

To participate, a project needs to have mentors who are willing to work with students. If you are interested in being a mentor, this the place to sign up. If you're not sure what it takes to be a mentor, you can read, Advice for Mentors(external link), which has some good information.

Here is a list of people who have volunteered to be a mentor. Add your name if you would like to participate.

  • David Cramer
  • Dick Hamilton
  • Stefan Seefeld
  • Steve Ball

Application Page

You can now review a draft of the GSoC Application for the DocBook Project.

Ideas

We now have a separate Ideas Page, which contains information about project ideas.

Information for Students

If you are a student interested in applying to the Google Summer of Code with a DocBook project, please visit the Student Information Page.

Lessons Learned

Now that we have completed this year's program, please visit the Lessons Learned Page and leave any thoughts you have on the program and how we could improve on it if we participate next year.
